Twenty-one Years of REAP
by Irene O'Mara

The Academy's U.S. Army sponsored Research and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP), which offers economically and socially-disadvantaged high school students hands-on summer apprenticeships in university labs with professors as mentors, has just completed its twenty-first year. REAP is an exceptional program for one reason only: the dedicated mentors who give of their time and energy to make a one-on-one difference in the lives of the students with whom they work. Many of our mentors have been on board with us from the very beginning in 1980. They believe, as we do, in the powerful long-term effects of helping students who might otherwise not realize their potential.

From reports we receive each year, we know that the mentors gain great rewards from the opportunity to mentor these bright, open minds. It certainly is a win-win for both the apprentice and the mentor.

Fifty-three universities around the nation participate in REAP. We thank each of them for their efforts and foresight in helping us make this unique program such a success, and we invite others to discover the magic that happens when REAP enters their lives.
