Oyster River Middle School Hosts Teacher Workshop

Immersing themselves in the process of inventing, 5th grade teachers and support staff from New Hampshire's Oyster River Middle School gathered for a hands-on workshop in preparation for the annual Invention Celebration.

YIP Consortium members conduct hands-on workshop at Oyster River Middle School

The group, joined by members of the N.H. Young Inventors' ProgramTM Consortium, Sandy Perfito and Deb Wiswell, shared their thoughts, experiences and new ideas by brainstorming topics such as: why teach invention, approaches to the celebration, and developing an idea.

Using the Meant to Invent!? Teacher Guide as a resource, the group contributed to a variety of discussions on critical thinking activities, curriculum, enrichment materials as well as participating in role-playing (how to come up with an idea).

Participants were divided into groups and came up with their own "inventions." They visited the "junk" table, built their model, recorded their process in a journal, and then came up with a display and a marketing theme. After each group presented to the entire class, the process was assessed (becoming teachers again). The inventions were outstanding. Teachers left the workshop with their Meant to Invent!? Teacher Guides, an actual "invention" to share with their students, and a real sense of enthusiasm and preparedness for initiating their own Invention Celebration at Oyster River Middle School.

We look forward to seeing their student inventors at the statewide Celebration for years to come.
