Why not establish a National Parade to honor American Ingenuity?

Dear Friends,
I just finished reviewing the first issue of SPARKS 2001. Great piece of work! It charged me up so much I am writing to you and several special people to determine what kind of interest there might be in motivating youth as well as adults by honoring American ingenuity with a nationally recognized parade. Outstanding people who have had a major influence in enriching our lives would be showcased; renowned scientists, engineers, inventors, entrepreneurs, artists and musicians. Recognition could extend to the winners of prestigious school competitions from primary and secondary schools through collegiate levels.

For decades the Edison Festival of Light Parade has capped a month long Southwest Florida celebration highlighting its most famous winter resident and Life Magazine's choice for "the most important person of the millennium," Thomas Alva Edison. It is through this medium honorees would receive the acclaim of hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the two mile-long parade route in addition to the televised audience.

What are your thoughts about generating support for an annual national celebration of scientists, engineers, inventors and entrepreneurs? ???
The Edison Festival of Light is now accepting nominations and sponsorship of outstanding Americans to receive national recognition during the upcoming February 16, 2002 celebration. This event is already recognized as one of the largest nighttime parades in the Eastern United States. It would be a great venue to draw public attention to our nation's greatest resource while serving to motivate our youth and instill pride in our citizens.

Comments, suggestions, and nominations can be e-mailed to my attention at . ?
--Sincerely, Dr. Gary H. Nelson Member, Board of Directors, Edison Festival of Light; Chairperson, Thomas A. Edison Regional Science & Inventors Fair; President, Edison Inventors Association

EDITOR'S NOTE:
The suggestion of a national parade honoring inventors, scientists, and entrepreneurs is particularly welcoming in these days following 9-11-01. Magnifying and focusing on the spirited individuals who continue to substantially improve our lives is a fitting tribute to these heroes.
