Channel 13 Teams with Local Colleges
by Carolyn Choate, Program Manager, CBC

Coming swiftly on the heels of its joint venture with New Hampshire Technical College [SPARKS, 1st quarter 2001], the Academy's Channel 13 in Nashua, N.H., recently expanded its partnership to include local colleges, Rivier and Daniel Webster. Teaming up to form a powerful alliance, the aptly-named Yankee Collegiate Network will develop an educational programming network.

This educational initiative between Center Broadcasting Corporation and the colleges will provide a venue to further the notion that literacy is the key to political empowerment and self-reliance, to showcase the good works of area colleges, students, and faculty, and to foster socially-conscious relationships with the community at large.

The partnership is the culmination of the step-by-step efforts taken by CBC's flagship station, WYCN tv13 Nashua, to realize its dream of fostering education. Gradually, over two decades, the station has become both financially sound and technologically advanced enough to support this initiative. Working through issues such as producing quality programming and filling hours of airtime, with just a tiny staff, has been a hallmark of the station. Faced with high rents and the need to maintain $500,000 worth of equipment has been a challenge WYCN tv13 Nashua continues to meet. In recent months, support has come from a small loyal cadre of local businesses that help to underwrite the station.

The collegiate programming initiative represents that which lies at the heart of the Academy's mission--excellence through innovation, invention, and education. The target date for the first series of shows is January 2002.
